Are you also a fan of classic love poems just as we are? They do have something magnetic that keeps us attracted to them even eras later. We’re adding yet another classic to our collection, Love is More Thicker Than Forget by E.E. Cummings
Introduction Of The Poet:
Edward Estlin (E.E.) Cummings, the poet of ” Love is More Thicker Than Forget”, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He studied Latin and Greek at Cambridge Latin High School. Cummings pursued his degree of BA and MA from Harvard. He decided to become a writer when he was a kid. In 1922 he published his first book, The Enormous Room, an autobiographical novel about his temporary imprisonment in France during the first world war.
Tulips and Chimneys, Cummings’ first collection of poems appeared in 1923. His way of using grammar and punctuation is evidently unique in his works, despite the fact many of the poems are written in ordinary language. Nevertheless, his poetic language was uniquely his own, Cummings’ poems were one of a kind with themes that other poets stopped covering ages ago. He mainly wrote about love, childhood, and flowers. Cummings was ranked among the best love poets of his time. Cummings’ poems were mainly erotic.
Brief Introduction Of The Poem
E.E. Cummings in his poem “Love is more thicker than forget” perfectly explains the twists of love and its adversities. In the poem, the poet explains that love is not just about a particular emotion. It is neither just about pure happiness nor about total sadness. Instead, it is a complex experience. This poem by E. E. Cummings is basically based on Eros’s love. An oxymoron. A broad range of human expression is also seen.
The poem expresses many forms of love. It demonstrates how it can be thick and thin, crazy and deep. Love is a way of being alive, normal, and sane, and it is also higher than the sky. Most importantly, love can never die. The poem is filled with comparisons, which strikes at the emotion of feeling the love. As we know, love is never easy and clear-cut, and that’s why the poem is slightly confusing.
Love is More Thicker Than Forget
By E.E. Cummings
Love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail
It is most mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea
Love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive
It is most sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky
Analysis of the Poem
The poem “Love is more thicker than forget” by E.E. Cummings consists of only four verses that describe love as just the way it is. With poetic language, the poet gives love a little more life and meaning than it truly deserves. His poem is so confusing that we cannot understand its mystery and wordplay at first glance. We have to reread twice or thrice to understand love is not what we think it is or we think it should be, it is a bit complex.
The fundamental part of the poem “love is more thicker than forget” is its metaphoric structure. There is a constant comparison of both concrete as well as theoretical elements, which creates a baffling and conflicting definition of what love actually is. There is no strict description of love because it’s everything and nothing, it’s supposed to be all at once.
The first two lines simply mean that one cannot forget the love of their life. And there is no need to recall those feelings. We all somewhere know and agree that we cannot feel the same for more than one person. In the last two lines of the first stanza, Cummings illustrates it with the concept of “waves.” He simply means the rareness of love is much greater than the wetness of waves. This gives the reader the aura that love is traveling back and forth. Love can hit us just as easily as it can leave us; that love can be untrustworthy and can refuse to accept you, and can turn its back on you.
In the second verse of the poem, “love is more thicker than forget,” the line “it is most mad and moonly” explains that there are times when love will be good and there are times when love will be bad. We must not expect love to make sense because love is messy yet eternal. Now, in the further lines of the stanza, E. E. Cummings explains that love has more depth than the ocean. Here readers can compare love with the same heartfelt, great characteristics of the sea.
The third verse of Love is more thicker than forget is a bit difficult to understand. So basically, in these lines the poet is trying to contrast different words and phrases, only to emphasize how love is never static but also never perpetual. What do humans fear the most? We fear losing in front of anyone, and one of our greatest fears is death. So by saying “love is less always than to win, less never than alive” the poet conveys how even all these is less than love because love is above everything else. It makes us more alive than winning, or more alive than anything else on this planet. Love is forgiveness.
In the fourth stanza of the poem, “love is more thicker than forget”, Cummings has used phrases, “it cannot die,” and “is higher than the sky.” These phrases, without much elucidation, contrast the first stanza of the poem. The poet acknowledges that love is something that doesn’t end in a sense. These lines show that love has no boundaries. Here the poet said love is higher than the sky, which indirectly means limitless love. It is immortal.
There is a line in the poem Love is more thicker than forget, “it is most mad and moonly” and “it is most sane and sunly” It is a clear example of juxtaposition. E.E. Cummings calls love mad as well as sane. It clearly shows love is something that is very difficult to understand. Some are crazy in love, whereas some are sane and conscious because of love. The latter are those people that if they do not get that love, will consider their lives as meaningless.
